You will also see the same thing if you examine an external USB drive even if the drive does support SMART because macOS doesn't include the necessary driver to allow SMART communication with a USB drive. I just checked one of our 2017 MBPro non-Touchbar laptops and Disk Utility showed "SMART Status: Not Supported", so this appears to be normal for this particular laptop. It is unfortunate that Apple doesn't properly support SMART on this laptop/SSD.
